I'm A Natural At The Yogurt Game

Mr Right and Buster have this gross competition that has been ongoing for a number of months now.  After our evening meal they'll usually have a yogurt for pud and both try to remove the lid of the yogurt without disturbing the 'skin' that has formed just under the lid.  It's barbaric but my saving grace is that, despite the various techniques they employ, they usually fail.

I don't have yogurts very often but I did the other day and I ripped off the lid without thinking and this is the sight that met me, it would appear that I'm a natural (sorry!) at the yogurt game!

Apologies if we've put you off yogurts forever.

Costa Black Forest Hot Chocolate

We did some Christmas shopping over the weekend and to ease ourselves in we visited Costa where they currently have some new hot beverages for the Christmas season, I heard mutterings about how wonderful the Black Forest Hot Chocolate was on Twitter the week before so I was eager to try it as I love Black Forest Gateau Cupcakes and here it was in liquid form (I'm far too lazy to do anything as time consuming as chew these days).

Believe me I was not disappointed, warm, creamy with the perfect balance of choc and cherry, the only thing that was missing was the Cherry Brandy but perhaps I'll have a bash at home and make a boozy version.

Anyway, I'm not sure how long these babies will be sticking around so I urge you to get down to Costa and try one for yourself before I drink them dry.

Not A Patch On Mary

My dear friend Mary is a whizz with a sewing machine and is always extolling the virtues of patchwork and she sent me a wonderful birthday gift of some material to add to my stash back in September.

I entered a giveaway on her blog to win some fat quarters of her gorgeous vintage sheets and she sent me a message encouraging me to actually do something with the material I already had so I took her up on her challenge and during an hour's lull between cooking the Sunday roast and rushing off out to my goddaughter's third birthday party I had a bash.

Mr Right kindly purchased me a rotary fabric cutting wheel and I made a square template out of cardboard and got to work with five different pieces of material in blue hues, the paisley from an old pair of pyjamas, the butterflies from one of Missy's old tops, the Cath Kidston strawberries my mum kindly gifted me, the swirly pattern from an old blouse and the yellow flowers from Mary's gift stash.

I cut five squares from each of the five different materials and experimented with some layouts and then got to work sewing them together
when I had all the pieces stitched together I added a plain white backing using one of Missy's old cot sheets and stuffed the whole thing with some wadding
Most parts actually met up
a couple were misaligned but I'm blaming time constraints, my hatred of ironing and my sewing machine's hatred of me
All in all it wasn't bad for an hour's work!

Missy's Second Birthday

Well Missy turned two last week what a wonderfully busy week filled with cakes, cards, presents, family and friends it was.

For the family celebration I made a Show Me Show Me cake (Missy's current favourite CBeebies offering) featuring the playhouse in the sky and all the toys
Teddington, Tom, Mo-Mo, Miss Mouse and Stuffy on the top
A lot of weeks prior I had made Missy a Show Me Show Me birthday card and sent it in to CBeebies with the hope that it would be shown on air as Buster's had been 7 years previously
And to our great delight it was one of the lucky ones picked out and shown, here's Katy with the card on the big day
We also had some friends over for tea with their little ones at the weekend, I had an hour or so free and decided to make a very quick and dirty Peppa Pig cake so Missy could blow out some more candles
All in all it was a bit of a handmade birthday and as such I'm linking this post to White Lily Green's Handmade Thursday

Hat A Cake

This is what happens when two worlds collide, I like cake and I like crochet but who would win in a fight?!
I found a wonderful FREE crochet pattern for this hilarious hat here (but if you can't crochet then you can commission me to make you one via my Etsy shop) and set to work (also using the handy instructional video to help me) and here's the end result being expertly modeled by my ever willing put upon daughter

Cakey, Cakey! - DS Cake

Mrs T asked me if I would make a birthday cake for her son Sam this week, so I duly obliged and thought I'd share the results here.  It's a Nintendo DS as that's what the birthday boy was getting on the big day.

Cakey, Cakey! - Lemon Eleven Cake

Mrs B came round for her usual cuppa on Friday afternoon and I was bored of cupcakes so decided to whip up a lemon cake, this was no ordinary lemon cake, this was lemon cake turned up to eleven.

It was a lemon flavoured sponge which I 'fed' with a lemon syrup, filled with lemon buttercream and topped with more lemon buttercream and decorated with lemon jellies, how apt that it was made on the eleventh of the eleventh of the eleventh!

Just the thing for elevenses?!

Ears A Mice Hat

Another little one of my MANY crochet projects for your viewing pleasure, Mickey Mouse ears, the pattern I followed said it should fit a 2 year old but it barely fits her bear!

This Week's Junk Shop Jewels

This week's gems for your perusal, firstly some burgundy velvet material, Missy expressed a wish to dress up like a queen this week and I thought this would make an ideal cloak for her dressing up box, just need to add a suitably regal collar and she'll be all set (90p)

In the same shop I grabbed this, I fell in love with it for its colour combination (photo doesn't do it justice but it's a gorgeous teal and coral combo, my mum thought it was something that ladies used to store their stockings in in their underwear drawer to stop them snagging (75p)
Pretty little hexagonal tin (£1.49)
More wool for my stash (£1.20 the lot)
More teal, in the form of this hinged tin, on closer inspection it's from Fortnums, we're currently using it to house the many odd nuts, bolts and fixings that were being stored in a cardboard box that finally gave up the ghost due to sheer weight of its contents (50p)
Small pink plastic tray (99p)
Another belt (35p)
